Ecophab™ & the Up-Cycling Concept
"Ecophab™ is made from 100% post-consumer soda pop bottles"
Up-cycling is the practice of recycling waste materials for use in higher value products, such as turning soda bottles which are refined, purified, and chopped down into fiber which is then woven into fabric. This specific process produces a fabric called Ecophab™ made from Ecofi recycled material. Banner Creations has been a strong advocate of this product.
An American manufacturer developed this product which we employ in many of our in-house and client approved jobs. Visit or subscribe to the banner blog to keep informed on products developed with this non-woven and environmentally friendly fabric. View our photo gallery for Ecophab™ ( made from Ecofi ) examples -- they are near the end and clearly marked.
the process
- Plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers — soda pop bottles — are picked up at curb-side and community recycling centers.
- They are sorted by type and color then cleaned, crushed, refined, purified, and chopped into flake.
- These tiny pieces are then melted, liquefied, and extruded from spinnerets creating fiber strands.
- The strands are woven or knit into fabric by 2 mills here in the USA.
Its use includes apparel and carpet but we have found this material to be an excellent eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to many stock fabrics used at Banner Creations. Ecophab™ goes beyond our vision of producing a high quality product while doing no harm to the environment.
